Used Tractor shopping.  How to establish values.


Shoppers should be very concerned about the "long term value".  Just as when you shop for a home or and auto, the USED tractor shopper should itemize the "good and not-so-good" aspects of the possible investment.

Here's a sample of a used tractor evaluation "text listing -- work sheet." USED TRACTOR (16hp to 30hp)  -- Establish a logic for the "bottom line" value.

.... a shopper recently asked me to help him evaluation the value of a used tractor, 4wd, 20+ years old, with same brand loader, without power steering, soft cab, popular brand name, obsolete model #, in good running condition, being offered by a private seller for cash-as is-without warranty -- several hundred miles away from his home @ $7500.

I'll keep the info about the specific unit he was considering ... but share my response with you.

My logic ... based on this areas performance in the market ANY BRAND!

  • 1. Basic OLD Used Tractor, 2wd, w/o loader , that's in running and work ready condition (no money to spend first day), with purchaser buying "AS-IS" FOR CASH ... $1.00.
  • 2. After demo or test rub .. you still like it .. $200.
  • 3. A brand that you can easily order parts from a dependable supplier ..$1000.
  • 4. Value to add for extra good sheet metal and zero leaks ... $350.
  • 5. Value to add for tires that are #1 ... Replaceable from local tire provider, still 75% and not cracked or cut .. $200.
  • 6. Value to add if the hour meter is not in operating condition.... (You have to check it .. let it run an hour .. and "time it by your watch".  ZERO
  • 7. Value to add for hours less than a thousand .. (after checking the meter operation) $500.
    8. Value to add for a front in loader (Different brand as tractor) that does NOT show lots of sloppy space in the arms and buckets pins, control valve levers ... $100.
  • 9. Value to add for a front in loader (SAME brand as tractor) that does NOT show lots of sloppy space in the arms and buckets pins, control valve levers ... $1000.
  • 10. Value to add if Bucket is not bent down in the middle. $350
  • 11. Value to add if 4wd .. $1200.
  • 12. Value to add if 6 months power train written warranty is included ...$1000.
  • 13. Value to add if financing is offered by seller... $250.
  • 14. Value to add if ROPS AND SEAT BELT is included... $400.
  • 15. Value to add if manuals are provided... $50.

  • 16. Value to add if Soft cab is included... $500.

    This is a tough call...... Because of age and no power steering .. It's marginal This is a tough call...... Because it has 4wd -- it's much more attractive.  If I were trading on it  today ... I would limit my investment (wholesale at) $5000.  ... and then hope to retail it at $7000 with lot's of the items noted above.  Of coarse, when transport cost. taxes consideration are considered ... it may become much more attractive.  Did the $7800 included delivery, taxes, warranty, manuals, financing?
